The Tenterhook Times
United Kingdom
Приєднався 4 бер 2018
Hi - we are Jackie and Graham. We live in rural Mid Wales in the UK near a wonderful town and community called Llanidloes. We've been here 30 years now.
We make videos about fun stuff we do - organic gardening, traditional folk music, travel locally (and sometimes further afield or even abroad), and local community events - especially if live music, dance or green activities are involved! One of our favourite gardening projects is our passive solar greenhouse experiment - we are following the growing seasons year by year.
Why Tenterhooks?
Our veggie garden is on the site of a former fulling mill next to the River Severn. In the 19th century, when the flannel industry was at its height in Mid Wales, local workers hung woollen cloth out to dry on wooden frames called “tenterhooks”. They used to collect urine to wash the cloth in! Bizarre but true!
We hope you enjoy our small channel which gives a glimpse into our lives in Mid Wales.

The Real HAY Festival 2024 | Llanidloes, Mid Wales
Last Saturday we had a fab time at the amazing Real Hay Festival in the meadow fields of Newchapel, high above Llanidloes in Mid Wales. This Midsummer festival brings together ecology and wildlife, zero-waste and regenerative agricultural themes.
We met Bluebell and Molly, two working shire horses gathering cut hay on the fields, watched folk learning how to scythe and whittle, enjoyed wood fired pizza and Bill’s Welsh Mountain Cider whilst listening to local musicians perform on the outdoor stage - Marc Harpham and The Klezmonauts.
There were all kinds of creative and wild workshops, walks and talks, circle dancing, an axe and saw demo, a tug of war, kite flying and a BioBlitz to spot resident creatures and wildflowers at this stunning site high in the hills with views all the way to Cadair Idris.
Later we took part in two processions - the first with the Dyfi Samba Band to celebrate Midsummer, and the second at sunset with musicians from the local ceilidh band Sir Dancelot & friends.
This was the 3rd year of the Real Hay Festival which is organised by The Wilderness Trust and Zero Carbon Llanidloes - local charities.
Tunes
A Little Welsh Town - written and performed by Marc Harpham.
The following tunes from The Klezmonauts, our local Klezmer band:
0.11 Di mame iz gegangen - Mother went to market
2.20 Bughici's Freilach
5.10 Odessa Bulgar
You can watch a video of The Klezmonauts performing at the Bank Vaults in Aberystwyth a few months ago: ua-cam.com/video/4miB2h47Ilc/v-deo.html
La Mourisque - a Renaissance dance tune played by Cornelius Eger, Graham Brand, Matt Watson, Peter Timmins, and Rick.
Poetry written and performed by Michelle Pearce.

We built a GRAVEL GARDEN | South-facing terraces & DRY STONE WALLS on our steep hill
Переглядів 2,1 тис.Місяць тому
This is the story of how we turned the neglected crumbling terraces on the hill in front of our house into a delightful terraced gravel garden. We ripped out the old concrete blocks, built new dry stone walls from local stone along reshaped curved lines, added a small pond, laid gravel pathways, planted garden beds with shrubs, perennials and grasses and created a secluded sheltered seating are...

Featuring the amazing Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture at Berriew in North Powys, to the accompaniment of traditional folk tunes played by local musicians in Mid Wales. Andrew opened the museum, in a former squash court, in 1991, so that he could share his unique approach to life and art with the world. This was our first ever visit to the Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture - and it’s like walkin...

The Klezmonauts | Klezmer music at Bank Vault, Aberystwyth 2023
Переглядів 6275 місяців тому
The Klezmonauts are Mid Wales’s foremost exponents of Klezmer - the joyous, yet plaintive dance music of the Eastern European Jewish tradition. With soaring melodies intertwined with irresistible rhythms, played on fiddles, bass, keyboard, accordion and clarinet, any attempt to keep your feet still will be futile. The Klezmonauts played at the Bank Vault live music venue in Aberystwyth on Frida...

This year we made our first ever visit to the small coastal village of Borth y Gest near Porthmadog in North Wales and absolutely fell in love! It is a gem of a place, it has everything we adore in life, including mountains, the sea, wildlife (sea birds especially) and wildflowers, locally brewed real ale on tap just a short walk away in Porthmadog, and not forgetting the steam railways (which ...

On 19 June we went on a strenuous but wonderful hike up Cadair Idris, a mountain in North Wales on the southern edges of Eryri National Park (also known as Snowdonia) near the town of Dolgellau. At its peak Cadair Idris (the Chair of Idris) is 2930 feet or 893 metres above sea level. We climbed up Cadair Idris on the challenging Fox's Path - it's a very steep ascent up loose scree and rock just...
IRRIGATION set up in our passive solar GREENHOUSE
Переглядів 1,8 тис.Рік тому
Our new passive solar greenhouse has a versatile irrigation system in place. In this video we look at each of the different elements of the system, from the natural spring on our land, the electric pump powering the water up to the top of our hill and an enormous header tank, and then the gravity fed dripline irrigation system controlled by two tap timers in the greenhouse itself. Our passive s...

We had a delicious meal at Ultracomida, a Spanish-Welsh deli just a few short steps away from the oldest pier in Wales, and then spent ...
We built two PONDS | They changed our garden forever

Over the years we have enjoyed building and managing our two garden ponds for wildlife. We started by introducing a small pond to our gravel garden near the house. It was so successful that we dug a much bigger pond on the gentle hill below our compost toilet shed and then we watched, intrigued, as the wildlife poured in! Our organic garden is on a steep hillside in the Upper Severn Valley near...

I really love those Finnish tunes and I'd really like to try to play them. Where might I find them please?
Yay! Hay! Bien joué!
Merci mon ami! 😍
Nice video. Where did you purchase the train tickets? Fort william station or Jacobite steam train site. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately, most Welsh locals can't afford to live here anymore due to the amount of middle class English people that have bought the houses there.
Ooh aargh,buy a Combine,it the 21st century😅
With a name like yours i would have pegged you as 19th Century. Anyway, scything is much cheaper and more green in small areas of hay. Combines are usually for corn (ie cereals not just maize). I don't think you know your country lore ver well especially as the grass has to be turned and dried before it becomes hay. Only then can it be gathered and bundled for the winter feeding. Combines pick the whole lot up and shred the cereals from the stalks. These stalks are not used for feeding but as bedding. So, all in all your comment was facetious.
Great work!
Thanks! 👍😃
Lovely to see Graham, Peter and Corns. Super film!
Thanks Susie, glad you enjoyed it, such a wonderful day! 😊
Thanks !
Our pleasure! 🌾🌼🪁💚
I live in the Perth hills in Western Australia so I’m dealing with a very different climate. The biggest challenge here is long hot dry summers and infertile gravelly soil. We have sporadic frosts in winter, but only at night. My biggest pest is kangaroos which can reck a garden in one night so I have high fences to keep them out. I love looking at how other people overcome their food garden challenges. Your food garden is beautiful.❤
Hi Wendy, great to hear from you - the challenges facing you as a gardener in Western Australia make our issues seem quite minor by comparison! Well done for continuing to grow your own food despite the many obstacles 👏👏👍 Thanks for watching! 😀
You 2 are legends!
Cheers!! 😂
How long and wide is your greenhouse?
If you check out our first greenhouse video you'll find all the details about dimensions etc 👍👍 - ua-cam.com/video/-baJgKYVC3Y/v-deo.html
Whoa!!! Slow your frames down. A few places in the video your shots were only a fraction of a second. Not long enough for the human brain to process what we are viewing.
This was a labour of love and you are reaping the benefits! Beautiful!😍
That's a brilliant way of describing it! Thanks for your lovely comment 😊
Beautiful looking the garden, Its the bees knees.
We looked up the expression "bees knees" as we couldn't remember its origin. Apparently the pollen collected on bees' knees is thought to be especially nutritious! How wonderful! Thanks for your lovely comment 🐝🐝🐝🙂🙃🙂
How fab! What wonderful inspiration your garden is!
Thank you - it's great fun being creative in the garden - it's our playground really! 😄
Lovely video! Much thanks! It might be better if you separated the two narration voices more. Maybe per part, or at least per paragraph. The constantly changing voices made it harder for me to concentrate on what was said. Though it might be due to english not being my first language.
Thanks for your suggestion - we'll have a think about this for future videos 👍
I miss being able to go to sessions.
Beautiful garden and an amazing transformation from those initial photos. Well done; it looks like a very relaxing place to spend time.
Thanks it's been hard work but it keeps us fit and we love spending time here 😀💚
Lovely, so happy to have stumbled across your channel!
Thanks, and welcome! 😃
Thank you for the inspiration.
That's lovely that you found it inspiring, thanks! 😊
Your videos are wonderful, thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching and so glad you enjoyed finding out about our gravel garden! 😃👍
I was up there in the hot hot summer of 1976 on a school trip. We came down the foxes path after which we cooled our feet in the lake.
What a lovely memory of a wonderful walk! Thanks for watching and commenting 😃👍
Adorable vídeo, made by an adorable couple :) 💖
Aw, thank you, that's really sweet 😍
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
What a lovely video I’ve just watched, very successful, can I ask, what variety of fig tree you grow and how do they taste? thinking of getting one for my new greenhouse this year🤷♂️
Hi Stephen, the fig is a Brown Turkey and the ripe fruits are absolutely delicious, incredibly sweet and juicy. They do particularly well during a really hot summer. Hope you find one for your greenhouse too 🤞👍
2024 ,,, this Thursday session isn't still going is it?
Hiya, sadly this session is not running any longer. There is though a regular session on the first Thursday of the month at The Dolau Inn in Mochdre near Newtown, so not that far away. We made a video of that session too which you can watch: ua-cam.com/video/rodWLavnvmw/v-deo.htmlsi=hKeMvFRQbp2VdvR3
Passion fruit is a fruit to make pulp and use the pulp to make mousse, juices, cake, etc. It is an excellent source of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that strengthens the immune system, helping to prevent flu and colds. The presence of alkaloids in passion fruit gives it relaxing and calming properties, making it a natural ally against stress, insomnia and anxiety.

How much did this all cost you ?
my left ear enjoyed the video.
Fantastic! Thx for the inspiration and for sharing your project ❤❤❤
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment 😍
Thank you #SaveSoil #Consciousplanet
Y’all are so amazing! Thank you for taking us along in your journey
Hiya, thanks, yes the journey continues with growing season no 3 well underway already! 🍅🥒🥬🍇😃
This is my issue freezing nights in June and even late August!!
Exactly, can be a real issue! Where are you gardening?
Thanks.
You're welcome 😀
A really useful video. I installed 3 1000l buts behind my new glasshouse so I have water. I also have a pump and hose so manual watering 170' from the house and mains water is easy. Next step is the automation.
Glad you enjoyed it! This year in the UK there would definitely be no problem filling water butts with rain water which just keeps on coming! 🌧🌧👍
What an amazing space and so well produced and presented. You must be delighted at the difference between this space and the polytunnel.
Yes, we are very pleased. It is such a beautiful, calming space to work in. Today I have been sharing the space with a blackbird looking for worms to feed its young! 😍
I am delighted I stumbled across this video - I have a 'thing' for glass- and greenhouses. Was the back wall double skinned and cavity filled with something? Does the colour of the back wall make a difference (would a darker colour mean the wall would warm up more)?
The back wall is double skinned at the base and filled with concrete to give strength to hold back the hill at the back. This makes it a very cosy greenhouse! We're very happy with our annual harvests so far so a darker wall hasn't been a priority for us and we prefer the paler grey to make it look more spacious.
This is excellent. It's the first melody to learn for LCME grade1 Ukulele exam. Fortunately the requirement of the exam is a slightly simpler melody and played at about half the speed. It is great to hear it played by professionals.
It's a beautiful melody for a Ukulele exam, glad you enjoyed our version and good luck with all your music adventures! 🎶🎶😃
top vid
Top place and tunes! 👍
Another beautifully made video. I knew both of those tunes. :)
Thanks for watching - the tunes are wonderful and we love the experimental fun and games at the beginning too! 😁
Y’all are complaining about some bird song? Really? Just turn on the captions and keep it movin’! They’re filming outside! I can’t with y’all…😂😂😂😂
Absolutely right! Our place is full of birds! 🐦🐦🐦We love 'em!!
You should never play background music when you are talking. Otherwise the video was quite well done and very informative.
Nat sound overpowers you guys. Without my custom digital mixer i mighta skipped. Good info but try and flip the audio values.
Pro tip: you can rise temperature by piling compost against the wall
Onions and garlic will take care of your mouse issue.
Thanks for the tip - we've met more mice in season 3 in the greenhouse! 🐭🐁😂
@@TheTenterhookTimes You're welcome. This spring I noticed carrots left in the ground were a treat for some rodents. Doesn't work in winter I suppose. ;) Will cover the plants with soil this fall, and possibly less straw, or some saw dust instead. I'll research what others have experienced. Straw is a joy to wild turkeys also. They'll find the last seed if they can.
That's an impressive upgrade. Did you know pinching every second cucumber flower extends the productive life of the plant? You could start a compost heap outside at the back and pipe in the heat, or just leave it keeping the back wall warmer than otherwise.
Вы очень молодцы ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
👍👍👍👍😄
